based on the upside down medusa head in istanbul’s ancient subterranean cistern, which was built during the byzantine empire. it is said that the medusa heads, one on her side and one upside down, are set that way in order to neutralize the gorgon’s gaze. the effect is disorienting and mystifying. a favorite place to visit since childhood <3
